Barley

Organic Roasted Pearl Barley sourced from right here in Australia!  It has been lightly milled to remove part or all of the germ and bran, leaving just the 'pearl' inside.  It is then lightly toasted to give it a more robust flavour.  It is a popular nutritious grain with a mild nutty flavour and works perfectly in our blend of herbal coffee at Innocent Beans.

Cacao

Cacao nibs are sourced especially from Peru.  Cacao is essentially unprocessed chocolate and tastes delicious in the Innocent Beans recipe.  The certified organic indigenous growers use an age old system of permaculture, where the cacao trees are planted under the native forest canopy, along with other fruit trees, such as mango, avocado, papaya etc. All of these trees add to the fine multi-floral flavour of this exquisite cacao. The cacao beans are lightly roasted then separated into the husks, the nibs and the germs. At no stage in the processing does the temperature go above 45 degrees Celsius.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

Organic cardamom pods from  India.  The cardamom planet is native to India and Sri Lanka. Not only used in cooking, it is also used in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for mouth ulcers, digestive problems and moods. The cardamom pods from the tree 'Elettaria cardamomum' are naturally dried and ground into a powder. No preservatives or additives are used during the process.  It has a peppery, citrusy flavour which is the perfect complement for our chai blend.   Cardamom also helps to alleviate digestive discomfort and indigestion. Soothes heartburn and provides relief from bloating and excessive flatulence. They are also known to improve your breath!

Carob

Organic Carob sourced from Italy.  It is a naturally sweet, vegan alternative to chocolate, drinking chocolate and cocoa powder.  The carob tree ‘Ceratonia Siliqua’ produces carob beans which are 90% pulp, also referred to as kibble, and 10% seed. The kibble is made up of sugars, tannins and non-starch polysaccharides and gives a gret flavour in our herbal coffee blends.

Chicory (Chicorium intybus)

Organic Roasted Chicory Root sourced from India.  Chicory grows wild in many parts of its native region in Europe.  It has been used in the ancient world, as Romans used to call it Pliny.  The roasted root came into use around 1800, when Italians and English used it as an additive to coffee.  It contains no caffeine and may even counter some effects of coffee, such as jitteriness.  The English passed a law in 1832 forbidding its use in coffee due to vast inclusion as an adulterant, but consumers had already developed such a liking that the law was repealed in 1840.  Chicory has a rich, sweet nut like aroma and a smoky and somewhat bitter flavour profile - the perfect addition to our herbal range!

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia)

Organic cinnamon chips from Sri Lanka.  This cinnamon is also known as 'true' cinnamon.  These organic cinnamon chips are from the bark of a small tree that grows naturally in Sri Lanka.  Cinnamon is of the most celebrated spices for its versatility in both savoury and sweet food. It is great as a flavour enhancer and is also known for its positive health effects including reducing bloating and flatuence and aiding in digesting.  Studies have shown cinnamon can regulate blood sugar levels which help to stabilise energy levels and moods.

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum)

Organic clove buds from Sri Lanka. Although cloves have a very hard exterior, their flesh features an oily compound that is essential to their nutritional and flavor profile. Cloves have a warm, sweet and aromatic taste that evokes the sultry tropical climates where they are grown. They are also great for relieving stomach and digestive tract discomfort and the aid digestive function and detoxification. Cloves are anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, and also help to relieve bloating and flatulence.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis)

Organic Roasted Dandelion Root from Poland. The humble dandelion is much more than a weed that invades your backyard every spring.  It has been used as a medicinal herb herb for centuries across many different cultures.  But what's really amazing about the dandelion root is that when i is roasted, it gives a strong roasted, sweetish, bitter flavour that is reminiscent of coffee.  Also rich in vitmains and minerals, the dandelion packs a serious nutritious punch for a plant generaly thought of as a weed.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Organic Ginger Root from Nepal.  Ginger is one of the most frequently used spices in cooking and is used in both savoury and sweet dishes from all around the world. It creates great warmth and flavour in dishes but is also connected to Ayurvedic medicine to relieve nausea, indigestion, colds, sore throat and coughs. It also has analgesic, sedative, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

 

Ginger is packed full of nutrients including:

Magnesium (helps with muscle and enzyme function, energy transportation and protein production)

Potassium (a mineral essential to the proper regulation of fluids and minerals in the body)

Vitamin B6 (essential for energy production; fat and protein metabolism; and healthy skin, hair, eyes and liver. It also promotes a healthy nervous system)

Copper (essential in the formation of red blood cells)

Manganese (helps with bone formation, thyroid function, connective tissue formation, calcium absorption and immune functioning)

Antioxidants (help to reduce body inflammation and can help scavenge disease-causing free radicals).

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Organic Turmeric sourced from Sri lanka. Much like ginger, the roots of this tropical turmeric plant are harvested.  It adds a warm, spicy flavour and also gives a slight golden goden colour.  The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, a powerful antioxidant renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties.  There is also growing evidence for many other health benefits including treatment for alzheimers disease, arthritis and depression.
